Add a Versatile Revenue Stream to Your Digital Business With Space Branding
If you attended Dscoop7, we hope you had the opportunity to catch Masterpiece Graphix’s informative presentation on space branding. Dan Lawellin, MGX’s Vice President of Business Development, gave an energetic and informative presentation on the potential of space branding for HP Indigo users. Space branding is a great way for digital printers to add an additional revenue stream to their existing business. Space branding appeals to a wide variety of industries including retail, commercial, and other business models. Whether you’re running an HP Indigo roll press, an iGen, Nexpress, HP Indigo sheet press, or other digital model, space branding can add value to your digital business.
In this new economic climate, consumers are carefully planning purchases and are less likely to make an impulse buy. According to the In-Store Marketing Institute’s (ISMI) Shopper Marketing Trends, in-store branding has a formidable impact on consumers, with 70% attracted to aisle displays, 63% to merchandising displays, and 52% to shelf talkers.
Because of these emerging trends in buying behaviors, retailers are looking away from traditional advertising means and considering new avenues to engage the customer. In 2009, there was an 11% drop in traditional advertising spending in the typical television, print and billboard ad categories. This shows that brands and retailers are seeking out new and unique ways to draw attention to their products by utilizing in-store promotions, commonly referred to as “space branding.” Space branding can create “a store within a store” environment, to engage consumers, guide them to your products within the store and create a dynamic and immersed shopping experience.
The goal of space branding is to engage the consumer, creating an immersive experience and a personal connection to the brand. Retailers can apply space branding concepts to canvas an entire area of a store by using the aisles, walls, floors, shelves, windows, signage, and even its product packaging to create a uniform appearance. Retailers are already utilizing in-store tactics to promote their brand; a recent Retail Systems Research report indicated that 70% of retailers use in-store technologies to improve the customer experience. Other businesses like event marketing, restaurants, and corporate offices can also utilize space branding to create a compelling onsite message-centric experience.
Now your clients can effectively brand their entire location with floor graphics, wall graphics, counter talkers, shelf signage, POP displays, window decals, and even protective covers for electronics. Wall graphics, floor graphics, glass applications and pressure-sensitive vinyl are just a few of the available digital materials from MGX that can be used to produce elements of a space-branded location. Masterpiece Graphix highlighted many space branding materials at Dscoop including digital-ready substrates from partner 3M Commercial Graphics, as well as MGX-exclusive materials like RIT-Certified Masterpiece REVOLUTION White Wall Graphix (MGX-1141).

Create Durable, Water-Resistant Print Projects with Digital-Ready Synthetic Substrates
Some of the most challenging printing projects require substrate attributes that seem to contradict one another. For instance, a customer may require a material that has the look and feel of paper, but is also tear and water-resistant. Synthetic substrates are a good go-to choice for many digital press projects like prime labels, commercial print projects, photos, gift cards, tagging, and in-mold labeling. Synthetic materials are an ideal choice for applications in which durability and resistance to water and chemicals are important. Label printers and commercial printers are also looking to synthetic substrates to improve brand image, and to increase margin on their highest-quality jobs.
One market that is especially suited for synthetic materials is plant and horticultural tags. Plant tags need to be tear and weather-resistant with a bright white print surface. One MGX client produced a series of unique plant tags, complete with tear-off outdoor planting calendars for a large national green house. A synthetic paper was the right choice for this project for its durability, bright white finish, and its ability to be micro-perforated for easy tear-off.
Masterpiece Graphix has supplied hundreds of synthetic substrates to digital press customers, and offers not only BOPP, but other specialty solutions to suit specific needs. Here are just a few of the flagship digital-ready specialized synthetic products that Masterpiece Graphix offers:
- Masterpiece Premium Synthetic Paper: MGX offers several grades of synthetic paper in thicknesses ranging from 8 mil to 15 mil. Masterpiece Premium Synthetic is a bright white synthetic paper, and is available in sheets or as rolls. It’s a perfect product for tear, chemical, and moisture-resistant applications. Converting MGX synthetic paper stock is easy; the material can be cut, perforated, laser die-cut, folded, and punched. Its properties make it a superb choice for menus, children’s books; hang tags, safety tags, and horticultural tags. This material is available as unsupported stock or in conjunction with various specialty adhesives and liners.
- Masterpiece Premium Clear Polyester (PET): This material offers the same performance of our white synthetic paper in a crystal clear construction. An optional white tipped-on sheet allows the material to feed trouble-free through the HP Indigo sheet press engine, and removes cleanly for the final application. HP Indigo users can combine the clarity of the substrate with the white ink system to create a wide range of opaque and transparent effects. Masterpiece Premium Clear Polyester is available in sheet or roll form through the MGX/Transilwrap partnership. MGX can offer HP Indigo-compatible polyester roll and sheet stocks, as well as options for the Kodak Nexpress and Xerox iGen.
- Masterpiece Premium 6 mil Wall Graphix: While not traditionally considered a “synthetic paper”, Masterpiece Premium Wall Graphix is an extremely popular product for HP Indigo digital press users. The product features an ultra-removable adhesive that removes cleanly without residue. The material is repositionable, allowing the graphic to be reused or adjusted. This product is RIT-Certified for use on the HP Indigo 5000/5500, and is available in sheets or as HP Indigo-compatible rolls. This material is also available as a Kodak Nexpress or Xerox iGen-compatible product; please specify your press model when ordering.
If you are in the market for a specific synthetic material, or if you need a specialty material that will resist chemicals, moisture, and damage, MGX can help you get the digital-ready synthetic material you need. MGX has compiled a database of hundreds of synthetic substrate constructions, so we can help you find the best possible choice for your digital print project. For more information on synthetic options, please contact your MGX sales rep or email the sales team.
HP Indigo Tips & Tricks: Print Settings for Transilwrap 3D Bubble Sheets
MGX’s exclusive Transilwrap 3D Large Bubble Sheets (MGX-1267) have been a big hit with HP Indigo sheet press users. MGX-1267 is a stocked non-certified Masterpiece product for HP Indigo presses with a thick substrate upgrade. This non-certified product was initially designed to run on the HP Indigo S2000 press, but many HP Indigo 5000/5500 customers have ran the material even though it is technically out of spec (the material thickness ranges from about 18-20 pts.). Masterpiece Graphix recently showcased Transilwrap 3D bubble sheets as well as other digital-ready products available through MGX’s partnership with Transilwrap at Dscoop6.
Transilwrap® 3D Large Bubble Sheets is an innovative material that when printed creates a 3-D effect that is similar yet different to the 3D look of lenticular, which can be utilized without costly software or art setup charges. The final effect creates the illusion of 1-2” of depth of the printed image in front of the substrate’s bubble pattern, and the finished look is reminiscent of raindrops on a windowpane. Transilwrap 3D bubble sheets are also available in a small bubble variation as a custom product (MGX-1265). The material is incredibly unique and versatile, lending itself to creating eye catching business cards, marketing collateral, direct mail, POP displays or indoor signage. Because of its unique visual qualities, many of our HP Indigo 5000/5500 customers have expressed interest in using Transilwrap 3D in their commercial print projects.
MGX has been working with Transilwrap in getting this unique material within the parameters for HP certification on the HP Indigo 5000/5500. At this time, Transilwrap 3D Bubble sheets are offered as a non-certified MGX product until the material can be manufactured in the 16-18 pt. range, the maximum thickness recommended for an HP Indigo 5000/5500 with a thick substrate upgrade. In spite of this rating, several HP Indigo 5000/5500 customers have successfully printed on Transilwrap 3D Bubble sheets, despite the material being slightly thicker than HP’s recommendations.
No matter which press you run the material on, Transilwrap 3D Bubble sheets can be tricky to print on due to the textured surface inherent of both sides of the material. MGX customers have achieved exceptional print results when using these press settings on their particular machine:
HP Indigo 5000/5500 with a Thick Substrate Upgrade:
- Stock set to 400 GSM
- 155°F Blanket Temperature
- The substrate works best on a new blanket and current machine LUT
- Please note: Transilwrap 3D Bubble sheets will only run on an HP Indigo 5000/5500 that is equipped with a thick substrate upgrade.
HP Indigo S2000 Press
- 130.5°F Blanket Temperature
- 0.08 Pressure
- Black blankets were used when printing by our testers
It is important to note that Transilwrap 3D Bubble Sheets are only HP Indigo-printable on the front side of the substrate.
For additional information on Transilwrap 3D Large Bubble sheets or printed samples from Masterpiece Graphix, please contact your MGX sales rep directly or email the sales team.
Application Corner: Give Any Locale Visual Impact With “Space Branding”
In this new economic climate, consumers are carefully planning purchases and are less likely to make an impulse purchase. Retailers are looking away from traditional advertising means and considering new avenues to engage the customer. In 2009, there was an 11% drop in traditional advertising spending in the typical television, print and billboard ad categories. Retailers can apply space branding concepts to canvas an entire area of a store by using the aisles, walls, floors, shelves, windows, signage, and even its product packaging to create a uniform appearance. Space branding can create “a store within a store” environment, to engage consumers, guide them to your products within the store and create a dynamic shopping experience. Retailers are already utilizing in-store tactics to promote their brand; a recent Retail Systems Research report indicated that 70% of retailers use in-store technologies to improve the customer experience. Other businesses like event marketing, restaurants, and corporate offices can also utilize space branding to create a compelling message-centric experience on location.
Masterpiece Graphix’s digital lineup of materials allows printers to create custom colorful graphics for any locale: be it a retail store, an event, or an office. Now your clients can effectively brand their entire location with floor graphics, wall graphics, counter talkers, shelf signage, POP displays, window decals, and even protective skins for electronics. Here are just a few of the available digital materials from MGX that can be used to produce elements of a space-branded locale:
Masterpiece Premium Wall Graphix: This unique substrate is useful for removable graphics on walls as well as shelf strips and counter talkers. This material is available as RIT-certified sheets for the HP Indigo 5000/5500 (MGX-1141) or as HP Indigo-compatible rolls (R1413). Dry toner-compatible sheets for presses like the Xerox iGen & Kodak Nexpress are also offered. Use in conjunction with our digital overlaminate materials to create durable or UV-resistant graphics. MGX uses Premium Wall Graphix and textured overlaminate to create branded, ultra-thin mousepads. Premium Wall Graphix can even be used in conjunction with specialized overlaminate for floor applications to create durable floor graphics; use alone or in a tiled pattern to make the most of prime branding space for your message. MGX offers specialized floor overlaminate with textured, non-slip, and gloss configurations; contact us to inquire which option would be best for your application conditions.
Masterpiece Premium GlassMate®: Window graphics are an excellent way to take advantage of prime unused advertising space both indoors and outdoors. Other overlooked benefits are the potential energy savings by blocking sunlight and the added security feature of blocking out windows. Masterpiece Premium GlassMate® is the ideal substrate for indoor and outdoor window applications. The material is available as white or clear sheets or rolls and is treated for use on HP Indigo, Xerox iGen or Kodak Nexpress. Please specify your press model when inquiring about available materials to ensure you get the right material for your machine. The material features a solid non-gummy adhesion system that works only on glass surfaces. If the material is applied properly to a clean glass window, the printed piece will remain indefinitely until removal. The specialized adhesive system allows the piece to be removed cleanly and easily without leaving residue behind. What also makes this specialized substrate unique is that the material and adhesion system is completely washable, so the printed piece can be cleaned and reused again and again. Premium GlassMate® is also weather-resistant and does not yellow or become brittle from UV exposure.
Static Cling: An economical window application standby, static cling is useful for indoor graphics that are viewable indoors or out. Static cling options include white or clear sheets or rolls, and the material is available as a compatible product for HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, and Kodak Nexpress. As with any digital material, please specify the press model you are using so that we can provide the right product for your machine.
Pressure-Sensitive Vinyls for iPad, smartphone, or other electronic covers: MGX offers several variations of pressure-sensitive 3.25 white vinyl for “skinning” personal electronics such as smartphones, iPads, and even computers. Electronics are important elements in any business location. Retail locations utilize cashier stations, self-checkout lanes, and computer kiosks. Even event marketing requires the use of smartphones, tablets, netbooks, and lead retrieval systems by staff. Branding these high-traffic, high-visibility components with colorful custom graphics is a new way to garner attention to your message and to complete the branded environment. There are many low-tack adhesive options available in sheets or as rolls for many electronic and appliance “skinning” applications. Please contact your MGX sales rep for substrate consulting for your specific application.
PVC, Styrene, Transilwrap 3D, and more POP signage options from MGX: Any traditional in-store branding includes the use of point-of-purchase (POP) signage. Conventional options include PVC vinyl for indoor use and styrene for outdoor use. Another interesting possibility to consider is Transilwrap 3D bubble sheets for indoor POP signage. The material creates a three-dimensional look like lenticular without the expensive software or setup costs. Besides PVC, styrene and Transilwrap 3D, MGX offers many other sheet and roll options for indoor and outdoor signage. With any unsupported sign material, a frame or stand will be needed to finish the sign. You may consider utilizing a clear substrate in conjunction with a backlit sign holder to make your message glow! For more information on the multitude of signage options from Masterpiece Graphix, please contact your MGX sales rep directly or email our sales team.
