Ramp Up Your Digital Press Offerings With Digitally-Produced Industrial Labels

Written by theresa on May 22, 2012 No Comments

Industrial labels have many important purposes: to identify a product, track/relay information, or to offer warning or instruction on a product’s proper usage. Industrial labels don’t sparkle or include complicated artwork; they are designed to catch your attention with bright primary colors, as well as withstand the rigorous, harsh environments typical of industrial settings. Industrial labels are very common, and found in a wide variety of markets including lumber tags, outdoor applications, HVAC units, security seals, and as caution/warning labels for a multitude of machinery and equipment. Despite the wide variety of applications for industrial labels, many of the requirements are the same: the label must be durable and remain intact for the lifetime of the product. These standards require use of aggressive adhesives, UV-stable synthetics, and materials that are resistant to damage by chemical exposure. Failure to use the proper material can cause the important information included on the label to be compromised, which could cause a hazardous situation if warnings go unheeded.

Since industrial labels are so common, and in many cases, imperative to the design of the product, the market presents the perfect opportunity to add additional offerings to your digital press product arsenal. In addition, the variable data options of digital presses offer label converters the ability to create one-of-a-kind labels that include serial numbers, manufacturing date, and other pertinent information.

Masterpiece Graphix is your go-to supplier for materials suitable for any industrial label application. MGX offers a variety of high-performance synthetic substrates in roll or sheet form that are guaranteed to print on your HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, Kodak Nexpress, and other digital press models. Here are just a few of the materials from MGX that are perfect for industrial labeling applications:

Masterpiece REVOLUTION Hardcoated PET: An alternative to polycarbonate stocks, hardcoated polyester, or PET, has a stronger hardcoat than similar polycarbonate options. PET is more durable than polycarbonate and is resistant to heat and chemical solvents. Masterpiece REVOLUTION Clear Hardcoated PET products are optically clear, offer excellent outdoor and UV stability, and are thermo-formable. These characteristics make Masterpiece REVOLUTION Clear PET options perfect for many industrial labeling applications, as well as other options like touch panels and electronic overlays. When reverse-printed and combined with a high-end adhesive option, Masterpiece REVOLUTION Hardcoated PET allows your business to deliver the highest quality and longest lasting industrial label and overlay options available. MGX’s REVOLUTION Hardcoated polyester stocks are available for both wet and dry toner-based digital press technologies like the HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, and Kodak Nexpress. MGX’s hardcoated PET stocks are available in sheet or roll form in 5, 7, or 10 mil thicknesses, with an anti-glare or gloss finish.

Masterpiece REVOLUTION White PET: White polyester (PET) is perfect for many industrial label applications. MGX’s exclusive REVOLUTION white polyester stocks are available for both wet and dry toner-based digital press technologies like the HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, and Kodak Nexpress. The material is available unsupported or as a pressure-sensitive product, in 5, 8, 10, and 14 mil thicknesses The material is chemical, water, and stain resistant, and the UV stability of the material make it an exceptional product for outdoor usage. The overall printability and strength make Masterpiece REVOLUTION white PET stocks a viable alternative to polyethylene and PVC. Masterpiece REVOLUTION white PET is an excellent choice for wet environment labels and harsh environment tags.  MGX’s white PET stocks offer 90 bright whiteness, high opacity, and antistatic properties.

Masterpiece REVOLUTION 3.25 mil White Vinyl/Perm/90# (MGX-1009): One of MGX’s most popular products, MGX-1009 is a pressure-sensitive vinyl that is HP-Certified for
use on the HP Indigo sheet press series. MGX-1009 is ideal for warning and instructional label applications because it is durable, easy to apply, and provides excellent printability, keeping the label intact and legible. The substrate provides good resistance to the abrasion that occurs during assembly, shipment, and everyday use, and is UV-stable when used outdoors. The material features a permanent acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive that performs well on many surfaces including low- and high-surface energy plastics, painted metal, powder-coated painted polycarbonate and fiberglass. In addition to being HP Indigo-certified, MGX-1009 is also interchangeably compatible with digital presses like the Kodak Nexpress and Xerox iGen.

Polycarbonate: MGX stocks several types of HP Indigo-compatible polycarbonate sheets, including 10 mil Velvet/Matte Makrofol® UV-1 Polycarbonate C1S (MGX-1089). Use of a polycarbonate formulated for UV resistance is essential for outdoor use, as yellowing will occur if the polycarbonate is not outdoor rated. Instrument panels, machinery nameplates, and outdoor signage are all viable industrial label applications for MGX’s  UV-resistant polycarbonate sheets. This material is made for reverse-printing applications, so the sheet is digital-ready on the matte side, and finished printed piece is applied velvet-side up to protect the ink. The velvet side is also scratch-resistant, as the material masks any surface scratches within the velvet texture. Other custom polycarbonate stocks are available through MGX; contact a Digital Material Expert for more information.

Overlaminate Options:  Masterpiece Graphix offers several digital overlaminate products that are suitable for industrial lablels, designed to perform well on digital inks. Masterpiece Graphix’s Clear Medium Release Polyester Overlaminate w/ UV Inhibitors (691DIG) maintains optical clarity after the material is laminated. The material provides an attractive glossy finish and features excellent resistance to moisture, oils, acids, alkalis, and chemicals typical of industrial environments. This material contains a UV inhibitor, offering protection from the outdoor elements which will protect the printed substrate from sunlight, weathering, and aging.

Destructible Films : Masterpiece Graphix offers a multitude of other material options that are well-suited for industrial label production. MGX can supply destructible films with VOID, tamper-evident, and self destructing properties. These specialized substrates are engineered specifically for security applications that want to identify tampering. These specialized labels warn users of possible tampering, including machine entry, cover/door removal, and warranty-voiding use.

Masterpiece REVOLUTION Synthetic Paper: Masterpiece REVOLUTION Synthetic Papers are bright white and are a perfect choice for tear, chemical, and moisture-resistant applications like industrial labels. MGX Masterpiece REVOLUTION Synthetic Paper stocks can easily be converted via cut, perforation, laser die-cut, folding, and/or punching. Its versatile properties make the stock a superb choice for petrochemical identification tags, lock out/hang out tags, warning signs, safety tags, material identification tags, quarantine tags, as well as a variety of other industrial applications where durability is important. These versatile synthetic papers are RIT-Certified for use on HP Indigo digital sheet presses. Like all REVOLUTION products, Masterpiece REVOLUTION Synthetic papers are interchangeably compatible with wet toner and dry toner digital press technologies.

Reduce Print Costs And Increase Your Bottom Line With REVOLUTION Digital Synthetics

Written by theresa on May 22, 2012 No Comments

Are you getting more and more requests for short run, durable digitally printed products, but are unsure how your press will handle synthetic materials? Now you can run the same high-quality synthetic papers offered for the HP Indigo on your dry toner digital presses. Recently Masterpiece REVOLULTION Synthetic Papers stocks were HP Indigo-certified for the HP Indigo 5500, 7000, and 7500. MGX’s REVOLUTION stocks  are top quality synthetic materials designed to be interchangeably compatible with liquid toner and dry toner digital machines. This lineup of high performance digital synthetic papers are not only HP Indigo-certified; REVOLUTION materials are also compatible with toner presses like the Xerox iGen, Kodak Nexpress, Canon ImagePRESS, Konica Minolta Bizhub and other similar models. One MGX customer is reaping the benefits of REVOLUTION products by incorporating synthetic stocks into his dry toner digital press product offerings.

In a great example of the power of REVOLUTION materials impact on improving your business, a Midwest commercial printer came to MGX searching for a way to produce two million variable data membership key tags for a national business chain. While the tags printed beautifully on their other production equimpent, they felt that transitioning the business over to their Canon Imagepress would not only improve their efficiency, but allow them to increase their overall margin for the job. Knowing that their machine did not traditionally print on films, they reached out to the experts at Masterpiece Graphix for a solution.

A MGX Digital Material Expert suggested Masterpiece REVOLUTION 8 mil Synthetic Paper (MGX-1567) for the digital job. The print shop was surprised to learn that they could utilize synthetic paper stocks on their Canon Imagepress, and follwed the advice. With a few art adjustments, the company was not only able to produce the key tags on their dry toner press, but in doing so, the commercial print shop was able to increase their profit margin by better utilizing their digital equipment. In addition, the shop obtained other benefits by freeing up opportunity on another in-house digital machine. Since the stocks are interchangeable with many other digital presses, this created redundancy in their production equipment in case one machine ever went down.

Masterpiece REVOLUTION synthetic stocks are a great way to broaden your press offerings and lower your bottom line. Now you can print the same sought-after durable synthetic products on any of your digital equipmen,t, from HP Indigo to high heat dry toner presses. MGX’s Digital Material Experts can guide your team in navigating the unique challenges of integrating these high-performance substrates into your product line. Add a Versatile Revenue Stream to Your Digital Business With Space Branding

Written by theresa on April 17, 2012 No Comments

If you attended Dscoop7, we hope you had the opportunity to catch Masterpiece Graphix’s informative presentation on space branding. Dan Lawellin, MGX’s Vice President of Business Development, gave an energetic and informative presentation on the potential of space branding for HP Indigo users. Space branding is a great way for digital printers to add an additional revenue stream to their existing business. Space branding appeals to a wide variety of industries including retail, commercial, and other business models. Whether you’re running an HP Indigo roll press, an iGen, Nexpress, HP Indigo sheet press, or other digital model, space branding can add value to your digital business.

In this new economic climate, consumers are carefully planning purchases and are less likely to make an impulse buy. According to the In-Store Marketing Institute’s (ISMI) Shopper Marketing Trends, in-store branding has a formidable impact on consumers, with 70% attracted to aisle displays, 63% to merchandising displays, and 52% to shelf talkers.

Because of these emerging trends in buying behaviors, retailers are looking away from traditional advertising means and considering new avenues to engage the customer. In 2009, there was an 11% drop in traditional advertising spending in the typical television, print and billboard ad categories. This shows that brands and retailers are seeking out new and unique ways to draw attention to their products by utilizing in-store promotions, commonly referred to as “space branding.” Space branding can create “a store within a store” environment, to engage consumers, guide them to your products within the store and create a dynamic and immersed shopping experience.

The goal of space branding is to engage the consumer, creating an immersive experience and a personal connection to the brand. Retailers can apply space branding concepts to canvas an entire area of a store by using the aisles, walls, floors, shelves, windows, signage, and even its product packaging to create a uniform appearance. Retailers are already utilizing in-store tactics to promote their brand; a recent Retail Systems Research report indicated that 70% of retailers use in-store technologies to improve the customer experience. Other businesses like event marketing, restaurants, and corporate offices can also utilize space branding to create a compelling onsite message-centric experience.

Now your clients can effectively brand their entire location with floor graphics, wall graphics, counter talkers, shelf signage, POP displays, window decals, and even protective covers for electronics. Wall graphics, floor graphics, glass applications and pressure-sensitive vinyl are just a few of the available digital materials from MGX that can be used to produce elements of a space-branded location.  Masterpiece Graphix highlighted many space branding materials at Dscoop including digital-ready substrates from partner 3M Commercial Graphics, as well as MGX-exclusive materials like RIT-Certified Masterpiece REVOLUTION White Wall Graphix (MGX-1141).

Would You Like to Produce 24 mil, 30 mil and 36 mil Digital Products on your HP Indigo Roll Press? Impossible, You Say? Not Any More!

Written by theresa on January 24, 2012 No Comments

Would you like to be able to print 24, 30, and 36 mil cards on your HP Indigo roll press? Every Indigo professional knows that the press’s current capabilities limit printing to only 18 mil and thinner stocks.

MGX now offers a revolutionary digital product that allows you to produce double thick cardstock projects: Masterpiece Premium MAX Impact Stock. This innovative MAX Impact solution creates a finished piece that is twice the thickness of a typical “thick” postcard, and is compatible with HP Indigo and other digital press technology. This product is available in rolls or as sheets, and has recently been RIT-Certified for the HP Indigo 5500 & 7000 digital sheet presses. MGX now offers custom roll products in this innovative and versatile stock.

Imagine going to your best customer with hang tags, loyalty cards, postcards, retail tags, greeting cards, gift cards, business cards, and other commercial press projects that are more impactful and higher quality due to the thickness of the stock.

You’re probably wondering how you can produce all of these thicknesses on a digital press, when the maximum thickness you can run may be only 18 mil or less…read on to find out how we can do it.

MGX’s MAX Impact Stock is actually 12, 15, or 18 mils thick, with a specialized no tack adhesive on the back of the sheet and a score down the center. Both sides of your design are printed on the front of the sheet. When the printed piece is folded at the score with a typical bindery folder, the front and back lock together when cut on a guillotine cutter to create an impressive 24, 30, or 36 mil card. After printing, the sheets can be UV coated to add gloss and protection, or add a thin protective lamination layer to make the card thicker and more durable. MGX MAX Impact stocks are available as a custom roll product, and is made to order per your company’s specifications.

Masterpiece Premium MAX Impact Stock is compatible with a wide variety of liquid toner, dry toner, and inkjet digital presses, such as the HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, and Kodak Nexpress. Other digital press models may also be compatible, but we recommend testing the stock first to evaluate compatibility with your particular press model.

Masterpiece Graphix MAX Impact 24 mil Cardstock sheets are currently RIT-Certified for the HP Indigo 5500 and 7000 digital sheet presses, and MGX is working on certifying MAX Impact roll stocks as well.

For pricing and additional information on Masterpiece Premium Double Thick Card Stock options for your digital roll or sheet press, please contact your MGX sales rep or email the sales team.

Create Durable, Water-Resistant Print Projects with Digital-Ready Synthetic Substrates

Written by theresa on August 28, 2011 No Comments

Some of the most challenging printing projects require substrate attributes that seem to contradict one another. For instance, a customer may require a material that has the look and feel of paper, but is also tear and water-resistant. Synthetic substrates are a good go-to choice for many digital press projects like prime labels, commercial print projects, photos, gift cards, tagging, and in-mold labeling. Synthetic materials are an ideal choice for applications in which durability and resistance to water and chemicals are important. Label printers and commercial printers are also looking to synthetic substrates to improve brand image, and to increase margin on their highest-quality jobs.

One market that is especially suited for synthetic materials is plant and horticultural tags. Plant tags need to be tear and weather-resistant with a bright white print surface. One MGX client produced a series of unique plant tags, complete with tear-off outdoor planting calendars for a large national green house. A synthetic paper was the right choice for this project for its durability, bright white finish, and its ability to be micro-perforated for easy tear-off.

Masterpiece Graphix has supplied hundreds of synthetic substrates to digital press customers, and offers not only BOPP, but other specialty solutions to suit specific needs. Here are just a few of the flagship digital-ready specialized synthetic products that Masterpiece Graphix offers:

  • Masterpiece Premium Synthetic Paper: MGX offers several grades of synthetic paper in thicknesses ranging from 8 mil to 15 mil. Masterpiece Premium Synthetic is a bright white synthetic paper, and is available in sheets or as rolls. It’s a perfect product for tear, chemical, and moisture-resistant applications. Converting MGX synthetic paper stock is easy; the material can be cut, perforated, laser die-cut, folded, and punched. Its properties make it a superb choice for menus, children’s books; hang tags, safety tags, and horticultural tags. This material is available as unsupported stock or in conjunction with various specialty adhesives and liners.
  • Masterpiece Premium Clear Polyester (PET): This material offers the same performance of our white synthetic paper in a crystal clear construction. An optional white tipped-on sheet allows the material to feed trouble-free through the HP Indigo sheet press engine, and removes cleanly for the final application. HP Indigo users can combine the clarity of the substrate with the white ink system to create a wide range of opaque and transparent effects. Masterpiece Premium Clear Polyester is available in sheet or roll form through the MGX/Transilwrap partnership. MGX can offer HP Indigo-compatible polyester roll and sheet stocks, as well as options for the Kodak Nexpress and Xerox iGen.
  • Masterpiece Premium 6 mil Wall Graphix: While not traditionally considered a “synthetic paper”, Masterpiece Premium Wall Graphix is an extremely popular product for HP Indigo digital press users. The product features an ultra-removable adhesive that removes cleanly without residue. The material is repositionable, allowing the graphic to be reused or adjusted. This product is RIT-Certified for use on the HP Indigo 5000/5500, and is available in sheets or as HP Indigo-compatible rolls. This material is also available as a Kodak Nexpress or Xerox iGen-compatible product; please specify your press model when ordering.

If you are in the market for a specific synthetic material, or if you need a specialty material that will resist chemicals, moisture, and damage, MGX can help you get the digital-ready synthetic material you need. MGX has compiled a database of hundreds of synthetic substrate constructions, so we can help you find the best possible choice for your digital print project. For more information on synthetic options, please contact your MGX sales rep or email the sales team.
